NOVVEN Section 4
OVERVIEW
I-Queue! Server is a software utility that allows you to turn a
printer connected to any workstation on your network into a
shared printer. I-Queue! Server runs as a small TSR on the
workstation providing shared access to the printer (or multiple
printers) via the standard NetWare print queue mechanism.
Since NetWare already includes RPRINTER to provide a similar
service, you may be wondering why you need I-Queue! Server.
We shared that opinion until we actually tried to run RPRINTER
in our offices, and judging from the volume of problems reported
in the printing sections of the NOVB, NETW2X and NETW3X forums on
CompuServe, we are not alone.
I-Queue! Server was designed primarily to address the following
requirements:
1.) Compatibility with workstations running Microsoft Windows.
2.) Compatibility with more printer ports without the requirement
for "hardware interrupt support".
3.) Faster printing speed. (I-Queue! Server is 2 to 4 times
faster than RPRINTER depending on the speed of the PC it
is running on.)
4.) The availability of an RPRINTER replacement in a 30-day
trial version format so that users can "try before they buy".
While you are testing I-Queue! Server, you may wish to try it in
conjunction with the companion I-Queue! product. A brief overview
of the I-Queue! product follows below.
I-QUEUE!: THE NETWARE PRINTING TOOLBOX (available in the IQUEUE.ZIP file)
I-Queue! simplifies printing in the Novell NetWare environment.
From a small memory-resident pop-up (0 to 2-1/2KB), I-Queue! allows
users to easily change NetWare print queues and modify "capture"
parameters.
I-Queue! for Windows is a convenient Windows application that
adds similar conveniences for Windows users, combining NetWare
print queue selection and Windows print driver selection into
a single menu.
Key features include:
* Select a file server/print queue for caputuring
* Capture your output to a file
* Select the number of copies
* Enter or choose printer setup strings from existing PRINTDEF
information
* Select forms
* Ability to select from pre-defined PRINTCON job configurations
* Select timeout interval
* Enable or disable form feed
* Expand or disable tabs (text or binary mode)
* Enable or disable banner
* Notify when job is printed (available with Novell's PSERVER,
I-Queue! Server and several other third-party print servers)
Users can also easily display a list of jobs in any queue to
determine the status of a job, as well as deleting or changing
the parameters of any job that they submit before it prints.
Queue operators have the added capability of deleting print jobs,
moving and copying jobs between print queues, and re-ordering the
position of jobs in the queue.
I-Queue! also includes the following additional utilities:
OnHold is a TSR which allows users to submit print jobs that can
automatically be placed "on hold", or delayed for printing at a
later time.
DefCap allows you to modify CAPTURE parameters from the
command-line, but only modifies the specified parameters, leaving
all others intact.
Com2Lpt allows you to redirect serial (COM) port output to a
parallel (LPT) port, provided that your application prints
through the BIOS or DOS, and not directly to the serial port
hardware.
CreateQ allows you to create NetWare print queues where the
temporary files are stored on a volume other than SYS:.
INSTALLING I-QUEUE! SERVER
1.) LOGIN TO YOUR FILE SERVER AS SUPERVISOR OR A SUPERVISOR-EQUIVALENT.
2.) COPY I-QUEUE! SERVER TO YOUR SERVER
Copy I-Queue! Server's program files into the SYS:LOGIN
directory on your file server. This will allow workstations
to load I-Queue! Server before they are logged into the
network.
IQS.EXE
IQSE.EXE
IQSN.COM (optional)
LOADIQS.BAT (optional)
GETNODE.EXE (optional)
QSETUP.EXE (setup utility...requires SUPERVISOR rights)
SHOWPS.EXE (optional...administrative utility)
DEDICATE.COM (optional)
3.) RUN IQS30DAY OR IQSINST TO INITIALIZE I-QUEUE!
Run IQS30DAY.EXE to initialize the I-Queue! Server 30 day trial period.
If this is a purchased copy, run IQSINST to initialize I-Queue!
Server for your network.
4.) RUN QSETUP
The QSETUP utility is used to define the I-Queue! Print Server
ID (QSERVER).
Additionally, for each queue that will be serviced by I-Queue!
Server, it must be defined with this simple utility.
After you type QSETUP, if multiple file servers exist in your
network, you will be presented with a list of file servers
from which to choose, with the current server highlighted.
Press Enter to select a file server.
The next menu (or the first menu if you only have one file
server) displays the print queues on your network that are
being serviced by I-Queue! Server. Press Insert to select
from a list of other print queues on your file server that
can be setup for I-Queue! Server, then highlight an additional
print queue and press Enter.
5.) CONFIGURE WORKSTATIONS TO RUN I-QUEUE! SERVER
I-Queue! Server must be loaded as a TSR on any workstations
which will operate as "print servers".
For best results, it is recommended that you load I-Queue!
Server into memory on the workstations acting as print servers
before they log into the network.
*** The easiest way to accomplish this is to load I-Queue! Server
in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file of any workstations that will be
operating as print servers. ***
Alternatively, you may wish to create a common batch file on the
network which loads I-Queue! Server for print server
workstations. LOADIQS.BAT is a sample batch file included with
I-Queue! Server, which illustrates a simple technique.
There are two separate versions of the I-Queue! Server program.
IQS.EXE uses unencrypted passwords, and can be used under NetWare
2.x or NetWare 3.x when you have issued the statement SET ALLOW
UNENCRYPTED PASSWORDS = ON at the file server console. IQSE.EXE
uses encrypted passwords, and can be used in either the NetWare
2.x or 3.x environment without restriction. However, IQSE.EXE
requires approximately 3-1/2KB of additional memory to provide
the encrypted password support, so NetWare 3.x users may wish to
enable unencrypted passwords and use IQS.EXE instead.
Command line options for IQS.EXE and IQSE.EXE.
/U to un-install.
/Q<queuename> primary queue to service.
/Q2<queuename> 2nd queue name.
(NOTE: To specify a queue on another file server
use the syntax /Qserver\queue)
/x x is Printer (1-3 for LPT1-LPT3 / 1-4 for COM1-COM4).
LPT1 is DEFAULT
/S Serial version (use COMx instead of LPTx)
(NOTE: When using the serial option, you must
initialize the port's baud rate and parameters
using the DOS MODE command before loading IQS.)
/Cx x is 1-9 for copy to load.
(NOTE: You can load up to 9 copies of IQS per
workstation, simply specify a different copy #
each time.)
/P Use Direct Port I/O to print. (DEFAULT)
/B Use BIOS to print.
(NOTE: The BIOS option is slower, but will be
compatible with more "unusual" devices.)
/Dxxx Delay between jobs for xxx seconds.
(NOTE: This option is useful for printers that
auto-switch between PCL and PostScript.)
/Rxxxx Printer Reset String...
(NOTE: This is an ASCII string that will be
sent to the printer after each print job.
Use {xx} to include non-printable ASCII characters.
For example, <Escape>-E, which is the reset code
on HP LaserJets would be denoted /R{27}E)
/Oxxx Optimization. X is 16-1024 (128 Default).
(NOTE: Higher values give higher priority to
printing activity and will slow down other
applications running on the same PC. Lower
values will increase the response time for
other applications.)
/Fx Form Servicing Mode, where:
0 - Ignore forms changes. (DEFAULT)
1 - Minimize form changes.
2 - Change forms as needed.
3 - Plotter mode (pause for form to be
mounted before each print job)
(NOTE: The default mode 0 means that I-Queue!
Server will ignore form specifications in print jobs.
Modes 1 & 2 will cause IQS to request form
changes.)
/L Local notification of printer errors/form changes
(DEFAULT)
/N No local notification of printer errors/form changes
(NOTE: By default or with the /L parameter, IQS will
send NetWare broadcast messages to the workstation
it is running on with printer error or form change
notifications.
/Ex User who submitted a print job will be notified of
any printer status errors while their job is printing.
0 - User notification DISABLED.
1 - User notification ENABLED. (DEFAULT)
/I Show status Information.
/Wx Specifies a "polling delay" of how many seconds
IQS will wait between checking for new print
jobs when it is idle. The default is 3 seconds.
/Kxxxx This parameter allows you to change the number
of bytes that IQS reads at a time from the
print queue. The default (and minimum) buffer
size is 512 bytes. To increase the buffer size
to 1KB, use IQS /K1024.
LOADIQS.BAT
LOADIQS.BAT is a sample batch file included with I-Queue!
Server, which illustrates a simple technique for maintaining
centralized management of IQS configuations. It is NOT
necessary to use this approach, this is merely one alternative.
This batch file executes the GETNODE.EXE program (included with
I-Queue! Server) to set two environmental variables with the
network address of the current workstation. Conditional
statements are then issued to load I-Queue! Server on selected
workstations with the appropriate parameters.
An easy way to accomplish this is to place this batch file and
the GETNODE.EXE program in your SYS:LOGIN directory. Rename
LOGIN.EXE to LOGON.EXE, and rename this batch file to LOGIN.BAT,
so that workstations will execute it first instead of LOGIN.EXE.
Include LOGON as the last statement of this batch file to execute
the standard Novell LOGIN procedure.
The GETNODE program sets two environmental variables. NET will
be set to the current workstation's network address. NODE will
be set to the curren workstation's node address. Combined, these
will uniquely identify each of your workstations.
Here are some sample commands from LOADIQS.BAT showing how IQS
can be loaded in different configurations:
REM Bill's PC...Print Queue LASER1 to LPT2 with no local notification of errors.
IF %NET%$==00000001$ IF %NODE%$==000000000046$ IQS /QLASER1 /2 /N
REM Joe's PC...Print Queue LASER7 to COM1 with a reset code of <Escape>E
IF %NET%$==D0DAD0DA$ IF %NODE%$==02608CBADBAD$ MODE COM1:9600,n,8,1
IF %NET%$==D0DAD0DA$ IF %NODE%$==02608CBADBAD$ IQS /QLASER7 /S /1 /R{27}E
REM Print Server Workstation with multiple printers
REM First example is servicing 2 print queues.
REM Second example shows 1 print queue being serviced by 2 printers.
IF %NET%$==00000001$ IF %NODE%$==00000000006F$ IQS /C1 /QEPSON /Q2FS2\EPSON /1
IF %NET%$==00000001$ IF %NODE%$==00000000006F$ IQS /C2 /QLASER2 /2
IF %NET%$==00000001$ IF %NODE%$==00000000006F$ MODE COM1:9600,n,8,1
IF %NET%$==00000001$ IF %NODE%$==00000000006F$ IQS /C3 /QLASER2 /1 /S
FORMS MANAGEMENT
I-Queue! Server supports form changes if loaded with the /F1 or /F2
command line parameter.
When form changes are requested, a broadcast message will be sent to
the workstation operating as a print server.
Execute IQS /M to notify I-Queue! Server that the requested form
has been mounted.
USING I-QUEUE! SERVER AS A DEDICATED PRINT SERVER
In many instances, it may be desirable to dedicate a workstation
with multiple printers attached for print services.
Using the /C parameter, I-Queue! Server allows you to load multiple
copies of IQS or IQSE to service up to 7 printers (LPT1, LPT2, LPT3,
COM1, COM2, COM3 and COM4) from a single PC.
To gain additional printing speed from a non-dedicated workstation,
run the DEDICATE.COM program on this workstation, which will cause
I-Queue! Server to allocate additional time slices for printing
activities. Alternatively, you may wish to run I-Queue!'s print
queue management display on the print server workstation. I-Queue!
will also signal I-Queue! Server to allocate additional time slices
for printing activities.
ADMINISTRATIVE UTILITIES
QSETUP.EXE is used to define which print queues are serviced by IQS.
IQSN.COM is an optional TSR module that can be loaded after IQS/IQSE
to notify system operators that a printer requires servicing
because of a general error or out of paper condition.
IQSN supports the following command-line parameters:
/Nname - "name" specifies a brief descriptive name for the printer
location to appear in the error broadcast message.
/1username - "username" specifies a user to be notified of error
/2username conditions. Up to 4 users may be specified.
/3username
/4username
SHOWPS.EXE is a command-line utility that reports the status of
IQS/IQSE print servers connected to your network.

NETWORK UTILITIES
-----------------
* I-Queue! - Simplifies network printing and print queue management
in the Novell NetWare environment. From within a small memory
resident pop-up (0 to 2-1/2KB), I-Queue! allows users to easily
change NetWare print queues and modify "capture" parameters.
I-Queue! is compatible with Novell's PRINTCON/PRINTDEF and adds
global PRINTCON support for Novell's own utilities.
Queue management capabilities include: delete/reorder print jobs,
move/copy jobs between queues, and hold/delayed printing.
NOW INCLUDES A WINDOWS VERSION!
* I-Queue! Server - Turn printers attached to any network workstation
into shared network printers. Two to four times faster than RPRINTER,
compatible with workstations running Windows, and compatible with
printer ports that do not provide "hardware interrupt support".
* LockIT! - Intelligent Security for DOS & Windows workstations
on Novell NetWare networks. LockIT! addresses the problem of
users leaving workstations unattended, and the security issues
that this presents. Unlike other solutions that will reboot or
logout a workstation after a period of "inactivity", potentially
leading to data loss, LockIT! locks out keyboard input until you
enter your NetWare password...even allowing unattended processes
to continue executing.
* CastAway! - A better NetWare broadcast message trap. Get NetWare
message notification (e.g., SEND) without your PC locking up until
you press CTRL-ENTER! Get notified of new messages while in graphics
based applications! All in 0 to 1-1/2KB of conventional memory!
* PopIT! - Gain pop-up access to almost ANY program with less than
2-1/2 KB overhead. Network administrators -- access SYSCON,
RCONSOLE, FCONSOLE and all of your favorite network utilities
without leaving your current application.
* OnCall! - A memory resident "Chat" utility for Novell NetWare,
that runs in between 0 and 2-1/2 KB of workstation memory.
Simple, straightforward, and easy to use. NOW INCLUDES A
WINDOWS VERSION!
EXPRESSIT! ELECTRONIC MAIL
--------------------------
* ExpressIT! Electronic Mail - The ExpressIT! Electronic Mail product
family includes the following products:
* ExpressIT! - The network version of ExpressIT!, including
the MHS-compatible DOS version, which runs in less than 2KB of
resident memory.
* ExpressIT! Remote - A remote version of ExpressIT! (DOS) customized
for use on stand-alone/remote PCs. Includes Personal MHS and
allows users to send and receive mail with any MHS based
electronic mail system. Includes the ability to run the MHS
Connectivity Manager from within the 2KB TSR without exiting
your current application.
* ExpressIT! Windows Client - An upgrade for the network version
of ExpressIT! offering native support for the Microsoft Windows
environment, and a wealth of additional features.
* ExpressIT! Remote Windows - A remote version of the Windows
version of ExpressIT! customized for use on stand-alone/remote
PCs. Includes Personal MHS and allows users to send and receive
mail with any MHS based electronic mail system.
A special Windows based MHS configuration utility eliminates the
need to use the MHS Directory Manager.
All versions of ExpressIT! include ExpressIT! Directory Assistance,
facilitating automatic exchange of user directories between ExpressIT!
hosts.
MHS GATEWAYS AND UTILITIES
--------------------------
* MHS Scheduler - An MHS mail agent that provides greater flexibility
in configuring when MHS will connect to a host. On a host-by-host
basis, the MHS administrator can configure different frequencies of
forced connections based on different times of the day, with
separate weekday, weekend, and holiday scheduling possible.
MHS gateways and internetwork connections can also be scheduled.
The companion RunIT! utility simplifies the creation of batch file
gateways...now you can run your tape backup system on your MHS
server.
* MHS Librarian! - An MHS Gateway that allows users to request
information to be forwarded to them via MHS. Requests are
made by placing a keyword in the "SUBJECT" field of the message
that you address to the library. A list of files may be
requested by sending a message with the keyword of INDEX. The
system Admin can also configure MHS Librarian so that selected
users can request files or directories other than those that
appear in the index. Security is provided by a password program
that generates unique daily passwords, a fixed password, or you
can create your own password utility.
MHS Librarian! also supports "discussion lists", similar to
the "list server" concept on the internet.
* PageIT! - An MHS gateway connecting MHS-based electronic mail
systems to full text alphanumeric pagers. Once configured,
sending messages to an alphanumeric pager is as simple as
sending a message from your favorite MHS application.
* ForwardIT! - An MHS mail agent for automatically forwarding
MHS based electronic mail messages. ForwardIT! can forward
(or copy) messages addressed to an MHS address to an alternate
address.
ForwardIT! is most useful in the MHS remote e-mail environment.
By remote, we refer to field workers or business travelers who
operate ExpressIT! Remote, or other MHS compatible remote
software, on a PC or laptop to access their electronic mail
from a distant location. Examples could include a salesperson
between sales calls, a business traveler in a hotel room,
or work-at-home scenarios.
Without ForwardIT!, when mail is sent to a recipient's office
address, MHS does not allow for a remote user to dial into the
network and retrieve mail waiting for their office address. Mail
addressed to this office address can only be picked up at the
office.
In order to send a message to the user's MHS remote, the sender
must assume responsibility for sending a copy of the message to
the remote MHS address.
With ForwardIT!, the user leaves a forwarding address at the
office, and while they're out, all messages will be forwarded,
or copied, to their forwarding address, giving users transparent
access to their electronic mail while away from the office.
This forwarding address can be any valid MHS address, including
addresses via MHS gateways.
* MhsQ! - An MHS gateway interface to NetWare print queues.
Messages can be sent via MHS to a NetWare print queue.
This capability can be useful for MHS remote sites and/or
MHS enabled applications for generating printed output
and/or reports.
MhsQ! can also redirect print queues on one file server
to a remote print queue on another file server via MHS.
* ExpressIT! MHS Directory Assistant - A directory services
gateway that automatically creates and updates user routes
in a multi-host workgroup environment. Add a user at one
host within the workgroup, and the user route will automatically
be created at all other hosts within the workgroup. Add a
new host to your workgroup, and the host and user lists will
automatically be added to other hosts within the workgroup.
(Directory Assistant is bundled with ExpressIT! but is also
available separately.)
* MHSNotify! - A TSR which runs on the MHS mail server only, and
automatically notifies recipients of new electronic mail
received from remote MHS sites, or across internetwork
connections. An excellent alternative to MHSALERT for
DaVinci e-mail users! (MHSNotify! is bundled with ExpressIT!)
